NEUROTOXINS (Botox Cosmetic®)
What are neurotoxins and Botox®?
Neurotoxins are purified proteins produced from C. Botulinum bacteria and have been in use since the 1990’s with no serious documented side effects. The most used and researched toxin worldwide is Botox Cosmetic®.
Botox® acts by temporarily disabling specific muscles responsible for “dynamic wrinkles” caused by repeated facial expressions, such as frowning or squinting, resulting in a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. It does not freeze the face or limit facial expressions. Botox® is effective at:
- Smoothing out forehead wrinkles
- Eliminating frown lines between the eyebrows
- Lifting drooping eyebrows
- Minimizing crow’s feet lines (the wrinkles at the edges of your eyes)
- Eliminating the bunny scrunch (wrinkles at either side of your nose)
- Minimize a “gummy smile”
- Minimizing the lines around your mouth
- Minimizing prominent neck cords
Newer uses for neurotoxin include treatment of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating) and treatment of migraine headaches.
It is essential that neurotoxins are delivered by trained experts in an individualized and precise manner to achieve optimal and natural-looking results.

What are the side effects of neurotoxins (Botox®)?
Complications from neurotoxin injections are rare and there have been no serious documented side effects. The injected medication is used in extremely small amounts and does not spread throughout the body.
As with all skin injection procedures, there is a minor risk of infection. Injections to treat frown lines can rarely cause temporary drooping of the upper eyelid (ptosis).
Are there any contraindications to neurotoxins (Botox®)?
Patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding, have a history of bleeding disorders, have an active infection at the injection site or neurologic condition should not get neurotoxin.
What to expect with neurotoxin (Botox®) treatments?
Neurotoxin treatments are quick and simple, with little to no downtime and very little discomfort. Injections are made with a tiny needle which feels like tiny pinches. Typical treatments take 15-30 minutes to complete.
Following Botox® injections, patients may experience mild redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site that resolve. Most patients return to work or routine activities immediately following their treatment. It is advised to avoid rubbing the treatment area, strenuous activity and alcohol consumption for at least 24 hrs.
When will I see results?
It can take up to 2 weeks to notice the full effect of Botox® treatments. The effects of Botox® are not permanent. The results typically last 3-4 months in most areas. Some patients may notice that their results last longer with repeated injections in the same area.
