Soft Tissue FILLERS (Juvéderm Cosmetic®)
What are soft tissue fillers and Juvéderm®?
Soft tissue fillers are used to restore soft tissue volume loss which occurs when collagen and elastin fibers in the skin breakdown. This occurs as a natural part of the aging process as collagen production can start to decline in the mid-20’s. Other factors that can contribute to volume loss include genetics, weight loss, smoking and excessive squinting, frowning and smiling.
There are different types of fillers available; the most common type of fillers is temporary collagen or hyaluronic acid-based products such as Juvéderm®. Although permanent fillers can produce long lasting results, they are associated with increased risks when compared to temporary fillers. Surgical fillers in the form of fat grafting/lipofilling requires surgical transfer of fat from one part of the body to another.
Juvéderm® is a leading brand in facial fillers. It is composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture and softness. Each Juvéderm® formulation is designed to address specific needs in different areas of the face to temporarily restore volume loss and provide long-lasting, natural results. Juvederm® has the added benefit that it can be dissolved in the unlikely event of a complication.

What to expect during treatment with soft tissue fillers (Juvéderm®)?
Prior to your treatment, the site will be thoroughly cleansed with an antibacterial agent. All Juvéderm® products contain lidocaine, which is a local anesthetic that helps to manage pain or discomfort during the injection. Topical numbing cream or ice can be used to further minimize discomfort. The process of injecting, massaging, and evaluating the result is performed, with additional filler added as needed. Depending on your customized treatment plan, a treatment session can take 30-60 minutes.
When will I see results and how long do, they last?
Results will be noticeable immediately! Depending on the type of Juvéderm® formulation used, results may last up to 2 years.
What are the side effects of soft tissue fillers (Juvéderm®)?
The most common side effects are redness, swelling, pain/tenderness, and bruising. Some patients may experience skin irritation (acne, rash, dryness, itching, discoloration), firmness and lumps/bumps. These side effects are consistent with other facial injections and most resolve within 30 days. As with all skin injection procedures, there is a risk of infection.
A rare but serious risk of soft tissue fillers is the unintentional injection into a blood vessel. The chances of this happening are small, but if it does happen the complications can be serious and may be permanent. These complications can result in vision abnormalities including blindness, stroke, skin necrosis, or permanent scarring of the skin. Most of these events are irreversible. If you have changes in your vision, signs of a stroke (sudden difficulty speaking, numbness or weakness in your face, arms or legs, difficulty walking, face drooping, severe headache, dizziness, or confusion), white appearance of the skin, or unusual pain during or shortly after treatment, you should notify your health care practitioner immediately. In the unlikely event of a complication, rest be assured that you will be cared for by a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Are there any contraindications to soft tissue fillers (Juvéderm®)?
Soft tissue fillers including Juvéderm® should not be used if you are pregnant/breast feeding, have a history of multiple severe allergies or anaphylaxis and allergies to Lidocaine or other soft tissue fillers.
Treatments should be postponed in areas of skin compromise such as sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or skin infections. All dental procedures should be postponed for a minimum of 2 weeks BEFORE and after treatments.
